Simple handmade ideas for slow living, cozy spaces, and creative afternoons

There’s something special about the way summer invites us to slow down. The days stretch longer, the garden full and lush, and inspiration seems to drift in with the breeze. When life feels fast and stressed, choosing to create something by hand—even something small—can bring us back to ourselves. It gives us time for reflection.

This season, I’m embracing soft creativity and old-fashioned charm with five gentle craft ideas that bring a touch of cottagecore charm to everyday life. These aren’t just pretty—they’re meaningful, useful, and filled with character. Here’s how I’ll be adding a bit of whimsy to my summer:

1. Air Dry Clay Flower Frogs

Flower frogs might sound fancy, but they’re simply little disks with holes that help flowers stay upright in vases, mason jars, or teacups.

When you make them yourself they become something truly personal. You can shape them from air-dry clay to fit the vessels you already have—either inside or resting on top—and stamp them with florals, herbs, or lace for a rustic, homemade look. I don’t usually use flower frogs myself, but what I love about these is that sometimes you only pick five or six stems, and this gives them just enough support to look lovely in a vase. It turns a few clippings from the garden into a full arrangement - it’s a way to honor the small harvests and turn them into something lovely.

2. Crochet Chicken Trivets

Charming, practical, and full of personality—these crochet chicken trivets are the kind of thing that makes your kitchen feel like a storybook. I tried crochet with my daughter Viviane, and I found it easy and fun. Now I’m thinking these little chickens would make perfect summer projects.

There’s something beautifully cottagecore about making something by hand for the home—especially something so cheerful. In a cottagecore home, even the practical things—like a hot pad—can have personality and warmth.

3. Herb Bundles & Herbal Fire Starters

Herbal firestarters

There’s something timeless about bundles of herbs hanging to dry in the kitchen or tucked into a basket by the fireplace. But what really caught my eye on Pinterest were the herbal fire starters: little muffin tin sized wax pucks with herbs. They’re beautiful, fragrant, and perfect for setting a cozy mood—whether in the fire pit or by the winter fireplace.

I was wondering if you even need the wax though, because I’ve found that simply letting the herbs, or greenery, dry works beautifully. In fact, I often save dried evergreen branches from my winter porch urns—they’re incredibly effective, lighting one briefly makes the fire intense.

These homemade bundles add a natural, old-world feel to your home. They smell lovely, look beautiful, and make your fires feel special—especially when the colder nights return.

4. Crochet Bookmarks & Cord Organizers

There’s something so cozy about adding handmade touches to everyday things. Crochet bookmarks—shaped like flowers, fruit, or lace—make reading feel even more personal. And tiny leaf-shaped cord organizers are a soft, charming way to tame the tangle of tech cords.

Projects like these don’t take much time, but they offer so much joy. Cottagecore, after all, is about creating a life that feels intentional and beautiful, even in the small things.

5. Beaded Bracelets with a Cottagecore Twist

Flower and fruit bead bracelets

I’ve always loved the feel of beaded friendship bracelets—simple, nostalgic, and sweet. But lately I’ve been drawn to designs that turn beads into flowers or fruit. Now I’m on the hunt for the perfect red bead to make a cherry bracelet. Also, clay flower I found a delicate threaded style that looks just whimsical enough to try.

These bracelets feel like wearable memories. They’re perfect for stacking, gifting, or simply keeping as a quiet reminder of sunny afternoons spent making something just for you.

You don’t need a big studio or fancy supplies to create a handmade life. Just your hands, a bit of time, and a willingness to slow down. These little projects are perfect for those in-between moments: a morning spent listening to birdsong, a breezy afternoon by the garden, or an quiet hour in the evening.

Happy Crafting!

Tricia
